Assassin's Creed Unity (and beyond)
So...not only has Ubisoft decided to feature a parade of straight white guy protagonists from European/Euro-American history ever since ACIII, but apparently those protagonists are also getting more boring as well. Arno Dorian from AC Unity is basically Ezio Auditore 2.0, complete with the sassy attitude and tragically dead father (x2).
Oh, and I guess Ubisoft has decided fridging women is a great storytelling tactic, too. So they can't be bothered to animate women but they'll happily kill female NPCs for the protagonist's manpain. Gotcha. -_-
And I mean, AC Victory looks cool and I'm all for running around Victorian London, but (a) Ubisoft has all of world history to work with, so the fact that they've been sticking to Western Europe for their major console releases is annoying, and (b) please stop with the generic straight white guy protagonists. (They're not even interesting straight white guy protagonists, they're just so painfully generic.)
Other random observations:
- Am I the only one who feels like the graphics in AC Unity are a step back? The city looks really...computer-generated. (Although maybe Paris was just constructed with more foresight and regularity than other cities featured in AC.) And the faces kind of weird me out. They look...less realistic and more Uncanny Valley than previously, which really shouldn't be the case for a "next-gen" game.
- Why do most of the French characters have British accents? (Some of them even seem to have cockney accents, which is...really bizarre.)
- I know AC games are violent, but this game showed an amputation with a handsaw, that's really disturbing.
- Previously, the protagonist would talk to the target just before they died. Now Arno can...relive his target's memories when he assassinates them? What? Is there any explanation for this??? (Also, Eagle Vision apparently gives Assassins super telescope vision and super hearing as well, which is another new development...)
- It's getting harder and harder to believe in these Assassin origin stories. For previous Assassin protagonists, it more or less made sense as to why/how they could have no problem with killing people. But AC Unity has Arno, who grew up as part of the French upper class, and in the span of two years (?) decided he has no problem murdering people in urban Paris? ...Huh???
