I'm reading farla's deconstruction of Divergent, and it just suddenly occurred to me how this system could lead to a lot of mentally messed-up kids if there are no therapists in future Chicago (and it doesn't sound like there are).
Like, in Candor, if a parent doesn't like their kid, does that mean they're obligated to tell the kid straight-up that s/he's not loved?
And the Abnegation: after a lifetime of being told not to value your own existence, some people will have massive psychological issues.
And, oh gosh, let's not even get into Dauntless, which seems like the perfect breeding ground for bullying/child abuse/discriminating against people who aren'tstupid brave enough to give in to peer pressure. (Never mind that a certain amount of fear is a healthy response in the human brain.)
...Now I have this twisted desire to write about kids who got screwed over by the faction system coming together, trying to heal, and deciding to overthrow this broken system.
