RARGH! I want Bride of the Water God to freaking be OVER already so I can know whether Soah ends up with Habaek or not! D<
Stupid #$%$&*!#$ D<
Edit: Now that I am a bit calmer, I will go into my impressions of Bride of the Water God in a bit more detail.
Bride of the Water God is the first manhwa I've ever liked quite a bit. The artwork is gorgeous, the main characters interesting...at the beginning, at least. Soah's not a typical damsel in distress; Habaek/Mui is clearly flawed, yet there's something likable about him. Lots of sparks flying around and romantic tension, and after I finished the fourth volume I was thinking this is the first (modern) romance that I've liked for a long time.
Then I caught up on the recent chapter (40-chapter reading marathon in one night? You bet), and it fell apart.
First off, the middle was bogged down way too much by backstory. Secondly, I hate that Habaek/Mui is made out to be a "special" god who has some special destiny etc. etc. etc. Thirdly (and most infuriatingly), Nakbin, Habaek's former love, is brought back from the dead.
I HATE LOVE TRIANGLES WITH A BURNING FURY.
It felt to me like Kagome/Inuyasha/Kikyou all over again. Why can't dead people stay dead? Especially just after I nearly melted from a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming in the manga, where you finally hear Habaek/Mui's thoughts on Soah in a straightforward way.
(Actually, there was another sort-of triangle among Mui/Soah/Huye, but that one was okay since it's clearly Habaek/Mui's fault for acting really...bizarrely towards Soah that she runs to Huye for comfort. But love triangles involving dead-and-now-resurrected people is NOT OKAY.)
Then the whole Imperial Palace ark was extremely confusing. Habaek has some plan that involves trampling on Soah's feelings. Soah is kidnapped by the Emperor and now declared Huye's bride...what??? Soah's mad at Habaek/Mui, of course, for making her suffer emotionally, so she tries to betray him, can't, insert incredibly convoluted never-explained stuff here. Then Nakbin came back from the dead. Habaek more or less has eyes for her only--even though it's revealed to the reader that Nakbin hates Habaek and wants to kill him, and then I'm thinking HABAEK/MUI YOU IDIOT, FIGURE IT OUT ALREADY AND MARRY SOAH, BECAUSE SHE'S THE ONLY SINCERE PERSON IN THIS UNIVERSE.
GUH. Thinking about this story has made me angry again. D<
