Knickknacks and Random Impressions

Thanksgiving break was far too short...sigh.

I watched a lot of random stuff over the break, lik I Am Number Four (the movie), which was more boring than I thought it would be; Four is a serious jerk and Six is the only redeeming part of the movie. I was also introduced to Doctor Who yesterday at a dinner party. The show is ingeniously set up so as to hook the watcher, although personally I'm not a huge fan of it. While the Doctor is an interesting character, the show is quite random and less coherent than I would have liked.

I also watched the TV series Once Upon a Time while I was sick one day, and I played a ton of Skyward Sword.

Once Upon a Time (ABC)

This show is kind of fun. I love fairy tale retellings, and I'm actually kind of impressed so far by some of the new twists they've added--in particular, I love Snow White as a thief. The show would be better if the protagonist, Emma Swan, were less wooden. I have to say, though, Rumpelstiltskin's character is pure genius. I'm intrigued by the fact that he seems to be on no one's side...wonder what his role will be later.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Swor

27 hours in

I wasn't quite able to finish the game in a week, although I did make it to the sixth dungeon with all weapons obtained. This game reminds me a lot of Wind Waker: it has the same kind of charm, a sense of humor, and a vibrant world with so many things to do. The dungeons also feature some brilliant puzzles. The game's a lot harder than Twilight Princess; there is a major sense of accomplishment upon beating a boss because they do pack quite a punch. I do wish that the sky and Floria Lake were somewhat less sparse and that you can actually play the harp songs you learn. Oh, have I mentioned yet how beautiful the game is? It's gorgeous. I'm continually wowed by the Impressionistic textures, the watercolor-like distance blur, and some of the locales, particularly Floria Lake. Definitely looking forward to finishing the game and seeing how the plot plays out.
