rainwatersparkLooking for a diverse, feminist-friendly, awesome TV series to watch? Look no farther than ABC's Scandal!
- It has an awesome female PoC lead. Olivia Pope is my hero(ine).
- It has a ton of other awesome female major characters.
- Also an amazingly cool gay couple!
- And male-female relationships that can be friendships instead of always romances! Gasp!!
- Unlike most of the other mystery/crime-solving/whodunit shows out there, Scandal's unique angle is that it focuses a lot on utilizing the media and building public reputations. Which is very, very interesting.
Of course, the show has its flaws. I still can't help eyerolling at the romantic drama and starcrossed lovers trope that's featured so prominently. And I can't help feeling that Season 2 is headed for very, very dark places by the end. But considering so few shows these days are feminist-friendly and diversity-friendly and have good writing,* Scandal's positives definitely outweighs its negatives.
*(Oh, Beauty and the Beast. I tried to like you, and I really do appreciate your feminist-friendliness--a LOT--but in the end, it couldn't make up for the totally cheesy romance. Oh well, maybe I'll try you again another time.)
