Actually, I kinda lied when I said I missed all my deadlines. I more or less have a rough draft that is missing a few chapters that needed to be rewritten, and also has some plotholes/missing content during the ending arc, but a rough draft all the same. Due to the frankly haphazard way I wrote this script, some chapters are pretty polished and others are a mess. I'm also missing one and a half subplots that I really want to put in the story. Ah well, let's see if I can finish editing this by the end of September still.

Despite the fact that this "fun," "short" project has ballooned into a ~25 chapter, 500-750 page monster, I still wanted to keep the story fairly small and contained, without sacrificing quality. I'd love to give Casey Jones and Karai extended subplots, but I just don't feel that's going to be possible; I'll probably have to forego giving Casey a subplot at all, and Karai's subplot will probably have to be pared down to the bare minimum. I also originally wanted villains such as Baxter Stockman and Bishop, but that looks unlikely as well. It's remotely possible that I might be able to squeeze in Stockman, but Bishop, at most, will have to be a cameo.

It's pretty interesting. The story was originally going to be centered around the themes of family, what makes a "monster," and free will. Now, it's looking like another heavy-hitting theme at the center of the story is morality and doing the "right" thing. I want to deconstruct the kind of grimdark stories in which horrible things happen to decent characters because The World Is Unfair And Goodness Does Not Exist. Which is kind of funny, because a post-apocalyptic survival story about societal outcasts seems like the perfect setting for that kind of grimdark message. Bad things are going to happen to the protagonists, because sadly, heroes are not invincible, and sometimes, no matter how good our intentions are, they lead to undesirable outcomes. But in the end, they are still heroes, and they get to earn their happy ending.

It's going to be a cool story. :)
