Jul. 10th, 2015 10:04 pm"Because people like/want to be offended" is literally one of the most offensive things I've ever heard as a dismissal of people's grievances from a feminist/race/etc. standpoint.
Like would you honestly believe that people would watch a movie or TV show/read a book/play a video game thinking "I really want to be offended by this piece of fiction"??? "Yeah, being offended sounds like a great use of my time and money"?????
Look, it's fine if you personally don't understand how people can find something problematic. I feel that way about certain issues that I've seen people discuss. But you should understand, especially if you're not a member of the marginalized group that's criticizing the portrayal, that maybe you're just not in the best position to talk over someone who is actually negatively affected by the problematic portrayal. And for crying out loud don't go around saying "Well you're just offended because you WANT to be offended."
You'll either sound like a douchebag or like someone who is mystified about why people choose to consume entertainment.
