I usually aim for between 40-50k words for a novel first draft, though I'm starting to get the feeling that Project E might end up being longer. I mean, I could be wrong and I'll end up wrapping up all the remaining scenes within 8k words, but...right now, I'm really not certain that'll be the case.
I think, once I have a coherent first draft, I'll end up chucking it over to my beta reader for her thoughts on whether I need to do any major editing (by which I mean changing up major scenes). I usually do substantial edits by myself, but the process for writing the "first" draft of Project E has been so slow and careful (in a way) that I don't really have any pressing thoughts on major scenes that need to be significantly changed around. Or I'm too braindead at this point to keep questioning the overall narrative. Either way.
I'm *hoping* I don't have to do too many major edits and can get to the micro editing stage (I love micro editing, but I rarely reach the point at which I'm able to really concentrate on that level of detail), though I know there are a couple of worldbuilding/research things that I've left slightly vague and might impact the plot once I hammer them out. Sigh.
I'm not sure precisely when the first draft will be done (since I missed my self-imposed deadline of the end of spring break). It should definitely be some time before the end of this year, assuming nothing catastrophic happens in my personal life. In my ideal world, I'd like to get the first draft finished before finals period this semester, then go through the beta-reading process over the summer, and then decide what to do with Project E from there—whether I'll try to go for traditional publishing or self-publish online and then move onto a new project.
In other news, I've basically stopped thinking about my life plans other than getting this novel finished, so I'll probably have to start seriously thinking about that once Project E is done...
