(*points at userpic* not THAT Dante, by the way XD)

There's been a lot of outrage for various reasons--the butchering of the Divine Comedy, the fact that the game is a God of War clone, etc. etc.

I can't speak as to the originality/lack thereof in the game, considering I can't get it and would never want to play it anyway. My interest stemmed from a curiosity as to how the developers were interpreting the Inferno, which I read (though I preferred Purgatorio better). I was partly amused and partly horrified at the changes. Instead of a fainting poet, Dante is now a scythe-wielding Crusader who fights his way through the nine circles of Hell. The setting seems to have given the designers free reign when it comes to gore. From demonic babies in Limbo to the triple-headed ball of slime that is "Cerberus," to...I don't even want to think about the horrors of the circle of Lust.

I wonder if the developers couldn't be a little more original and creative and maybe, y'know, slightly more reverent towards the poem, if they're going to name the game Dante's Inferno. It also seems like they just wanted to cash in on God of War's success. Yes, I'm biased against violent games in general, but how about a puzzle-based platformer à la Ico, using Virgil to help Dante get around? Throw in rich NPC interactions (half of the Inferno consisted of Dante chatting with dead people, anyway), some interesting environmental puzzles (it's Hell, there's all sorts of crazy stuff going on and boiling blood rivers to traverse), maybe even Shadow of the Colossus-type bosses, considering the hugeness of Satan and all that stuff. (Plus, Dante actually does climb down Satan's back in the end.) And there, you'd have a winner.

Heh, funny that I thought of Ico/Shadow of the Colossus. I've barely seen Ico, though I've watched some gameplay of Shadow of the Colossus, and it creeped the living daylights out of me. Both are also cult classics; how come no one's going around ripping off those games?

Probably the most ridiculous thing about the real Dante's Inferno game (alas, that my vision should only exist as a fantasy D: ), aside from the incredibly sensationalist gore and nudity, is that there's set up for a sequel. Purgatory? Seriously? Don't tell me they plan to have more gory hack-and-slash up Mount Purgatory, because I will probably lose my lunch. Several times.

Let's not even get started on the possibility of having Paradise...
