I watched Vergil's Downfall. It was interesting, and to be honest it looks fun as hell to play as Vergil, though from the narrative side I don't think it does a great job of fleshing out Vergil's character. It does help a bit, but it's not superbly executed or fresh or anything.

I thought it quite odd that while in the original games, Vergil was the elder and Dante was the younger twin (fitting in with Dante's rebellious personality vs. Vergil's more serious one), this DmC reversed the roles. I don't know why except perhaps to explain Vergil's brother issues, but even if that were the case, (a) brothers can dislike/hate each other for reasons other than younger-is-jealous-of-elder; and (b) the rivalry had no setup or foreshadowing in the actual game.

Vergil was a legitimate rival in DMC3. As the elder and the more powerful, he was constantly curbstomping Dante and giving Dante a reason to chase after and fight him, yet the ending of the game gave him a more tragic dimension.

Vergil in DmC seemed like a friendlier version of DMC3 Vergil, complete with the classier outfit compared to Dante and the leadership position for the resistance group, but then the ending made him the surprise antagonist-all-along and the DLC makes him into a rather pitiful figure with a boatload of Freudian issues that came from nowhere. And his character contradicts itself: unlike in DMC3, DmC Vergil hates demons in the main game, but his sudden lust for power in the DLC makes him happy to use demons as his new minions. Um, what?

It was somewhat interesting that the DLC made it so that Vergil has Mommy Issues instead of Daddy Issues as in the original, but the DLC doesn't really improve the main game's misogynistic undertones. Eva shows up in Hell (or wherever the heck Vergil is) only to be smacked around by a demon and for Vergil to abandon her coldly. For no reason other than jealousy of Dante. (And did I mention that said jealousy was never even alluded to in the main game?)
