Another Milestone!
Apr. 24th, 2012 09:38 pmRF: 21,000 words / 41 pages
RF hit 20,000 words today! Whoohoo! My feeling is that the rough draft will wrap up around 30,000 words, even though my target for RF is 50,000 words. Well, I'm not too worried about it at this point, because I see a lot of potential for expansion, in fleshing out the world, adding descriptions, and putting in more scenes later. Although, I have to admit, at some point I was wondering to myself how RF would ever approach EK I in length.
I mean, EK I is over 60,000 words, which is a personal record and frankly still seems insane to me. And it's not even technically done yet.
So, to reiterate writing goals for the rest of the semester and summer:
1. Finish RF rough draft.
2. Revise both RF and EK I.
3. Aim to have both RF and EK I (or at the very least, RF) beta-read by the end of the summer, with all feedback incorporated.
4. Also finish Snow Queen novella (which has been hanging in editing limbo due to a shortage in beta readers).
Depending on what shape RF is at the end of the summer, I may, MAY start giving myself a crash course in querying and the publishing biz. *shiver* Geez...I can't imagine it. I've been dreaming about becoming an author for so long, the prospect of actually trying to get published seems like a pipe dream. I'm sure something will get wrong, and I won't get my writing done over the summer, and none of these goals will be met...
I'm still wondering whether I should prioritize finishing the EK or Ranked trilogy first. My head tells me Ranked, because it's more current, I have to finish it before I graduate college, and it's what I've always wanted to try to get published first anyways, but my heart tells me EK, because I have an emotional connection to that story that I don't have with any other of my works (at this point, anyway), I love the protagonist and his journey deeply, and I'm really committed to seeing the story through to the end, because it's also been a sort of personal catharsis for me.
Decisions, decisions.
I decided not to write a senior thesis next year, but you know, if I'm going to be working on Ranked #2 and/or EK II during senior year, those might as well serve as my "thesis" project. (I mean, EK I is already twice as long as a senior thesis anyway.)
