I wasn't a huge fan of Riordan's last book, The Sword of Summer. I mean, I loved Samirah al-Abbas, and Jack the talking sword made me laugh hysterically, but I wasn't a fan of Magnus Chase himself, and that kind of put a dampener on my enjoyment of the book.
I was skeptical of the premise of the Trials of Apollo series, but I ended up loving The Hidden Oracle. Apollo had a hilariously self-absorbed voice, and his character journey throughout the book was surprisingly heartfelt. I especially loved the fact that he's explicitly bisexual (I mean, real-life Apollo is actually bi, so), and I caught the sly reference to The Sword of Summer and Apollo commenting that Frey was smoking hot, haha.
Meg was a cool, badass character (with a surprisingly dark background—I wasn't expecting Rick Riordan to go there). Also, we finally get a child of [god's name redacted] as a main character demigod—I've been dying to see a child of [god's name redacted] for ages. Will and Nico were fun, and it's always great to see the Camp Half-Blood demigods again.
Overall, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, and I'm pretty excited for more self-centered-but-hilarious Apollo's journeys.
