...is when I get tired of a genre and start looking for a new genre, just for something different.

I jumped ship on YA just because I got tired of constantly reading synopses that were like "Female Protagonist meets Mysterious Dude and has to battle her attraction to him while saving the world/surviving some ordeal."

Now it's the same with MM romance—specifically, MM contemporary genre romance.

Genre romance wouldn't sound as cookie-cutter to me if it was the entire broad spectrum of genre romance: fantasy romance, sci-fi romance, romantic suspense, etc. However, contemporary romance alone, over and over again, can get very formulaic to me.

I swear every synopsis I read for a contemporary MM romance is like "Two white cis allosexual [usually abled] dudes who are college students/having personal/work-related issues meet, bang, and fall for each other. Usually, one is closeted while the other isn't. The one who is closeted is clearly going to have to get over his hang-ups over being closeted or else his True Love is going to leave him."

Every.

Single.

Time.

It's already driving me out of my mind. Like, at least give me some protagonists of color, preferably written by an author of color? Give me more asexual romances? Give me (RESPECTFUL) disability rep? Give me fantasy/sci-fi/political intrigue/well-written mysteries/things blowing up? PLEASE????

Sigh.
