Castlevania: Lords of Shadow ending

I'm not sure why I'm talking about this game. I don't even know the Castlevania franchise well; I watched a few trailers and was like "Ooh pretty graphics/Why is the main character such a hulk?" I realized today that it was already out and thought, "Ho hum, let me watch the ending."
The ending was...bizarre.
So The Big Twist is that Gabriel Belmont, who's been trying to resurrect his dead wife all this time, was actually the one who killed her in the first place. Um, what? It would make slightly more sense if Zobek was controlling Gabriel at that time (but how?), but in the flashback, Marie clearly lays her head down for Gabriel to decapitate her with an ax. WTF??
(Either she wanted to die (!?) or she was very stupid? "Honey, why don't you put your head on that stump? It's not like I'm going to kill you with this ax in my hand." - "Oh, of course, dear! Obviously you're not going to kill me with that ax in your hand!")
Also, why in the world did Gabriel not kill Zobek on sight in the epilogue (heck, how was Zobek still alive after being burned up by Satan?), and why in the world has Gabriel/Dracula been camping out in a cathedral for who-knows-how-many years??? And remind me how he got turned into a vampire again??!
